The relationship between psychological distress (stress, anxiety, and depression) and gaming addiction disorder in adolescents

Abstract :
The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between psychological distress and gaming disorder among adolescents. This study is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-correlational in terms of nature. The statistical population of the study included all secondary high school students in public schools of Tehran in the academic year 2025-2026. From among them, 300 individuals were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling. The instruments used in this study included the Digital Game Addiction Scale and the Psychological Distress Scale. Pearson correlation test was used for data analysis. The findings from the data analysis showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between the components of psychological distress including anxiety, depression, and stress with the level of dependence on online games; such that with increasing levels of psychological pressure, adolescents' tendency to excessively use the gaming space as a mechanism to cope with or escape from negative emotions intensifies. Finally, the results of this study indicate that gaming disorder is not merely a habitual behavior, but may be rooted in underlying emotional problems. Therefore, it is necessary for psychological interventions to focus on improving mental health and teaching coping skills to prevent digital entertainment from turning into harmful tools.
